Once Robert leaves, Edna acts just as society wants her to, she feels unwanted and depressed because the man she is in love with left her convincing herself she has nothing and then commits suicide. The ocean helped guide Edna into her awakening by using personal traits and showing Edna a new world, by introducing her to the feeling of being free.
